1. LABORATORY TECHNICIAN – SOIL SCIENCE                      (1 Position)

 

Job Purpose

Responsible for laboratory-based tasks, which include soil sampling, testing, measuring and analysing results. The candidate will also provide all the required technical support to enable the laboratory to function effectively whilst adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist Lecturers in carrying out soil field experiments and laboratory practicals.
  • Conduct demonstrations for field and laboratory analysis to students.
  • Support members of staff and students in soil science related research and consultancy.
  • Perform laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations.
  • Carry out routine tasks accurately and following strict methodologies to carry out analyses.
  • Preparation of specimens and samples and assist in annual work plans.
  • Constructing, maintaining and operating standard laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure the laboratory is well-stocked and resourced.
  • Conduct soil analysis for clients and participate in income generation activities for the University.
  • Prepare budget estimates and reports.
  • Adherence to safety procedures and safety checks.
  • Performs any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Full Grade 12 certificate with 5 ‘O’ levels with Credit or better including English and Mathematics.
  • Diploma in Laboratory Technology/ Soil Science.
  • A Bachelor of Science Degree in Soil Science will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum of (3) years’ work experience; experience in a soil science laboratory setting will be an added advantage.

  • Immediate Supervisor:   Senior Laboratory Technician/ Head of Department
