Biomaterials Science and Technology (BST)
Overview
The Department of Biomaterials Science and Technology, formerly known as the Department of Wood Science and Technology, was established in 2003. The Department was created to meet the growing demand for professionals with expertise in the sustainable utilisation, processing, and value addition of wood and other renewable biological resources. Since its establishment, the Department has expanded its mandate to encompass sustainable energy systems, renewable materials science, and circular economy innovation, reflecting the evolving global transition towards a sustainable bio-based economy.
The Department offers degree programmes that integrate scientific principles with engineering applications to equip graduates with expertise in renewable energy technologies, sustainable materials development, biomass conversion, bioproducts, and bioenergy systems. Through teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement, the Department promotes the sustainable utilisation of renewable biological resources while advancing climate resilience through renewable energy technologies, supporting green industrialisation through sustainable materials and recycling innovations, and contributing to national and global efforts towards energy security, low-carbon development, and sustainable livelihoods.

Currently, all undergraduate programmes are offered on a full-time basis. Postgraduate programmes are available through both full-time and distance learning modes. Applicants seeking admission to a postgraduate programme must hold a first degree in a relevant field from a recognised and reputable institution.
